Canon firmware updates

Canon recently released a number of firmware updates.

Canon EOS 6D (v.1.1.7), EOS 70D (v.1.1.2), EOS SL1 (v.1.0.1), EOS Rebel T5i/700D (v.1.1.5), EOS Rebel T6/1300D (v.1.0.2)

These firmware updates all fix the same problem:
  • Corrects a phenomenon in which when using the camera with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM or EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens, even if lens aberration correction is set to “Enable”, correction will not be applied.
Note: The update for the EOS 6D does not include correction for the problem with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM as this lens is incompatible with that camera 😀.
Canon is working to fix similar problems in their EOS-1D X, EOS-1D Mark IV, EOS 5D Mark III, EOS 7D, EOS 60D, EOS Rebel T1i/500D, EOS Rebel T2i/550D, EOS Rebel T3i/600D, EOS Rebel T4i/650D, EOS Rebel T3/1100D, EOS Rebel T5/1200D, EOS M, and EOS M2 cameras.

Canon 5D Mark IV announced

Great news for all (Canon) photographers: Canon yesterday announced the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR. Like it's predecessor, the Mark III, it is a full frame camera with very good specifications.

One of the most interesting features, for me at least, is the “Dual Pixel RAW” feature. A feature that allows one to perform some very sophisticated image microadjustments (focus), bokeh shift, and ghosting reduction – during post processing!*
*currently only possible with Canon's own DPP

While I haven't yet seen this in reality myself yet, this sounds as a really powerful feature that other camera manufacturers should have a look at implementing too!

The 5D Mark IV will be available beginning of September for around $3,499.00 / €4,129.99 (body only)

Specifications

  • 30.4MP CMOS full-frame sensor with Dual Pixel AF
  • DCI 4K 30/24p video using Motion JPEG + 4K Frame Grab
  • 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type sensors (centre point sensitive to -3 EV)
  • Dual Pixel AF (sensitive to -4EV) for continuous Servo AF in stills and video
  • ISO 100-32,000 (expandable to 102,400)
  • 7 fps continuous shooting
  • Dual Pixel Raw
  • 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor
  • 1.62M-dot 3.2" full-time touchscreen
  • Wi-Fi w/ NFC + GPS
  • Built-in bulb timer interval timers
  • Improved weather-sealing

The new Canon EOS-1D X Mark II

Canon has just announced its new flagship camera, the EOS-1D X Mark II. Like Nikon's recently announced D5, this camera is full of exciting new and improved features.

Here are some of the more pronounced specs (with some comment as to how they compare to Nikon's D5).
  • 20.2 megapixel Full Frame sensor (similar to the 20.9 of the D5).
  • Continuous shooting speeds of up-to-14 frames per second (fps) with Auto Exposure (AE) and predictive AF for viewfinder shooting and up to 16 fps in Live View mode (faster than the Nikon D5).
  • Continuous shooting of up-to 170 consecutive RAW images at 14 fps (slightly less than the D5, but still plenty for even the most demanding action shooter).
  • Improved 61-point viewfinder AF with expanded coverage and all AF-points selectable and supported to a maximum aperture of f/8 (sure, not the 153 – all cross sensor – AF points of the D5, but these are all f/8 and 61 is still more than enough, if they're good).
  • Improved AI Servo III+ predictive AF algorithm for better accuracy.
  • Continuous red illumination of all AF points within the viewfinder (Nikon has offered this for years, quite surprised this wasn't offered on the Canons before).
  • 4K video at 60P (!) and Full HD at 120P (much better than the D5, but then Canon has usually been better at video anyway).
  • Enhanced wireless functionality with the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E8 (probably similar to Nikon's).
  • Digital Lens Optimizer to help correct aberrations in-camera (you previously needed to do this in post processing, Nikon has offered this for quite some time on its cameras and works quite well).
  • Compatibility with both CF and CFast memory cards for optimal performance and versatility (so now we have two competing fast memory cards: XQD (Nikon, Sony) and CFast, not sure which which is better…).

Canon EOS-1D X firmware update

More firmware updates this month: Canon has released firmware 2.0.8 for its flagship EOS-1D X camera. You can download the new firmware from the Canon website.

Firmware version 2.0.8 incorporates the following fix:

  • Fixes a phenomenon which occurs when the “Shutter button half-press” menu item, configured in “C.Fn5: Operation” > “Custom Controls Menu”, is set to metering start only; depending on when the shutter button is half-pressed, it may initiate AutoFocus.

Canon 7D MkII firmare update

Canon just released a firmware update for the 7D Mk II.

Firmware 1.05 contains the following fixes & improvements:
  • Improves AF accuracy when used in combination with the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens or EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens.
  • Fixes a phenomenon in which, in very rare cases, the "Peripheral illumination correction" is applied inconsistently.
  • Fixes a phenomenon in which, while performing an EF lens firmware update, the progress bar displayed on the LCD monitor may freeze at 100% even though the update has been completed.
  • Fixes a processing error in relation to the leap second for the "Geotag information appended to image" and "Log data" GPS functions.
  • Fixes a phenomenon, where at the time of shooting in very rare cases "Err 70" occurs, or the shutter does not release.
You can download the firmware from the Canon USA support site.

Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) 4.1.1 released with 7D Mark II support

Canon released a new version of their Digital Photo Professional image editing software. This new version now officially supports the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. This is especially interesting since this is the first APS-C DSLR that is officially supported by DPP 4.x (previously it only supported the recent full frame cameras, EOS-1D X, EOS-1D C, EOS 5D Mark III, and EOS 6D. For all other Canon cameras you have to use the DPP 3.x release software (though with altering one field in the camera metadata, you can trick DPP 4.x into working for other Canon EOS cameras too!).

You can download the new version of DPP from the Canon support site.

New Canon 7D Mk II DSLR and 3 new lenses

The rumour was there for a while now, but today Canon officially announced the new 7D Mark II DSLR. They also announced 3 new lenses.

Camera: 7D Mark II

The new Canon EOS 7D Mark II is a 20.2 megapixel APC-C (1.6x crop factor) digital camera. The specs look pretty awesome: It can shoot up to 10 frames per second at ISOs ranging from 100–16000 (expandable to 51200). It's AF system has 65 all cross-type (!) AF points and it has has a dual card slot for both CF and SD cards. GPS connectivity is also built in. For more specs and features, see below.
Price: ±$1,799 (body only)

Lens: EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Pancake

This new 24mm pancake lens is incredibly lightweight and small. With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 38mm, it is quite a multi-purpose lens, handy for a variety of purposes. It's STM motor allows for silent and smooth focus tracking during video shooting (on EOS cameras with Movie Servo AF). For more specs and features, see below.
Price: ±$149

Lens: EF 24-105 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

The new EF 24–105mm f/3.5–5.6 also boasts an STM motor for smooth and silent focus tracking during video shooting. A first for a Canon EF lens for full-frame sensor cameras. For more specs and features, see below.
Price: ±$599

Lens: EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II

This is Canon's new model of the popular 400 f/4 DO. It has a 3 mode Image Stabilization system, offering up to four stops of compensation. The design makes use of the more environmentally friendly lead-free glass. For more specs and features, see below.
Price: ±$6899

Specifications/Features

More specs and features of the new products are given below.

New version of Canon Digital Photo Professional software

Canon has released a new version of its Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software. This new version contains quite a few radical changes and new features over its predecessors. Big disappointment for many will be this new 4.0 version is only compatible with the very latest Canon DSLRs; only the EOS-1D X, EOS-1D C, EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 6D are currently supported! For other models, an update of DPP (3.14) will be released (not yet available, though).

For the new camera's the software does offer some great improvements though. Designed and developed from the ground up, the new Digital Photo Professional 4.0 is much faster as it fully utilises the 64-bit architecture of the host system.

You can download DPP 4.0 (for free) from Canon Europe's support site. Select your camera - EOS-1D X, EOS-1D C, EOS 5D Mark III or EOS 6D – and select DPP 4.0 from the software options to download.
Please note that DPP 4.0 will be compatible only with 64-bit versions of Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 as well as Mac OS X 10.8 and 10.9.

New key features

  • Faster, real-time adjustments.
  • Improved RAW file workflow.
  • Better, more approachable user interfaces.
  • Compatible with 64-bit native environments.
  • Colour adjustments for specific colour gamuts.
  • Improved highlight recovery provides expanded tonality.
  • Improved shadow recovery function.
  • Support for movie playback.
  • Auto Lighting Optimizer can be applied to JPEG images.
  • Better integration with EOS Utility.

New colour adjustment palette

A new colour adjustment palette allows hue, saturation and luminance adjustment for eight individual colour gamuts, enabling the user to adjust one specific colour in isolation without affecting the image as a whole. This is particularly useful when adjusting background tones in portraits, where there might previously have been a risk of giving a colour cast to skin tones, for example.

Enhanced highlight function

Canon software developers have re-engineered the processing algorithms to increase the freedom in tonal rendering. By adjusting highlights, it is now possible to reproduce tones such as those in clouds and peoples’ faces that would previously have appeared washed out.

Dual display support

For those photographers with dual monitors, DPP 4.0 allows a secondary monitor to be used as the preview window on the primary display. While the main monitor can be used to perform delicate adjustments, a secondary image window for images can be used as a magnifier for closer inspection of part of an image.

Better EOS Utility integration

With the launch of DDP 4.0 comes an updated EOS Utility 3 and the two pieces of software now offer better integration. The introduction of EOS Utility 3 makes it is possible to trigger the camera direct from the DPP tool palette as well as access to all the rest of the EOS Utility remote shooting functions without the need to start a separate application, thus enabling a more streamlined and integrated workflow.

New Canon EF 16-35 Lens

Canon has announced a new EF 16-35 f/4 L IS USM lens. This new wide angle zoom can be viewed as the successor of the EF 17-40 f/4 L USM and boasts up to 4 stop image stabilisation (a first for a professional grade Canon wide angle lens!). It is also going to be a welcome alternative to the EF 16-35 f/2.8 L II USM as it is likely going to be cheaper whilst still only losing one stop of light (it's not much lighter though; 615g compared to 640g).

Pricing and delivery dates are not yet announced. (but we have come to expect that from Canon…).
